Kalyani, West Bengal: Mohammedan Sporting began their Hero I-League Qualifiers 2020 campaign with a last-gasp 1-0 victory against Garhwal FC as full-back Munmun Lugun scored a long-range goal in the penultimate (90+3′) minute to win the match for his team at the Kalyani Stadium on Thursday (October 8, 2020).

The match seemed to be veering to a goalless draw, with Mohammedan’s Willis Plaza missing a penalty in the second half. However, Munmun came to the rescue in the dying moments to snatch a dramatic victory and begin his side’s campaign with three points.

The first half began with half-chances for either side, with Garhwal FC earning a free-kick in a dangerous position in the very first minute. However, Muhammed Shafeer’s delivery was collected by Mohammedan’s captain and custodian Priyant Singh. In the fifth minute, Willis Plaza was played in on goal with a wonderful long pass but his first-time shot from a tight angle went wide of the target.

It was the Kolkata-based side that dominated possession for most parts of the first half, with wingers Himanshu Jangra and Vanlalbiaa Chhangte looking dangerous down the flanks. Both entered the penalty area on a number of occasions but could not help their team open the scoring as the Garhwal FC defence was up to the task.

The Black Panthers dominated possession throughout the first 45 minutes but were unable to find the breakthrough, with Garhwal creating chances on the counter attack and goalkeeper Sayak Barai looking confident in his handling.

Interestingly, it was the Delhi-based team that almost took the lead in the 21st minute, creating the best chance of the first half. Their Nigerian striker Victor Philip got on the end of a perfect, swerving ball from the right flank with an immaculately timed jump but his close-range header missed the goal by a whisker.

Victor entered the thick of things once again three minutes before half time — shooting powerfully from a narrow angle but was denied by Priyant, who made a low, diving save at his near post.

Both sides made changes at the break, with SK Faiaz coming on for Mohammedan and Uttam Rai taking to the pitch for Garhwal as the match continued to remain a tense, cagey affair. Chances were few and far to come by, with Plaza dropping deep and looking to take up a playmaking role for the Black Panthers.

At the hour mark, Himanshu beat his opposing full-back down the left flank and charged into the box, before playing a low cross across the six-yard line which was cleared by a sliding Neeraj Bhandari.

Moments later, Victor broke through the Mohammedan defence and raced into the penalty area. As soon as he looked set to pull the trigger, he was denied by a brilliant last-ditch tackle by Kingsley Eze, sending the ball out for a corner kick.

Mohammedan earned a golden chance in the 67th minute to take the lead as Gani Ahmmed latched on to a slide-rule through-pass by Plaza and was brought down by Sayak Barai, with the referee booking the goalkeeper and pointing to the penalty spot. It was Plaza who stepped up to take the resulting kick but he failed to convert the opportunity as the ball hit the upright and went out of play.

Five minutes later, Plaza was to be denied by the woodwork yet again — this time the crossbar. Faiaz played in a chipped ball from the left side of the penalty box and the Trinidadian saw his headed attempt come back off the bar.

Yan Law’s team continued to pile on the pressure as the final whistle came closer but the opening goal remained elusive. In the 79th minute, Moinuddin charged down the right side and played in a lofted cross for Faiaz, who had the goal gaping in front of him but could not adjust his body in time to head the ball. Plaza thundered a volley just a minute later but it was blocked by Bala Alhassan.

Garhwal defended bravely against the relentless Mohammedan tide but in the 88th minute, they could have nicked the win as Victor played in Uttam down the middle with a deft through-ball. However, the forward fluffed his lines and saw his shot go wide of the post.

Four minutes of added time was announced and just as the match looked to be headed to a draw, Munmun Lugun secured the three points for Mohammedan with a goal worthy of winning any match. 30 yards away from goal and in the third minute of added time, he struck a powerful, dipping shot with his left foot that left the keeper with no chance and sent his teammates and bench into wild celebrations.

After the match, Mohammedan Sporting Head Coach Yan Law said, “Every team is here to compete. It was a tough match and we missed our chances — missed a penalty and hit the woodwork twice. Luckily, at the last minute, we scored a goal and hopefully, we will take this forward and pick up more points in the upcoming matches.”

Garhwal FC Head Coach Vikas Rawat commented, “In football, you have to keep pushing till the last minute and even added time. However, this result is not a heartbreak for us. I am sure it will make us tough and we will learn a lot from this game and it will make us stronger.”

With this result, Mohammedan Sporting join fellow Kolkata side Bhawanipore FC with three points from their opening game while Garhwal FC remain empty-handed despite being minutes away from recording a memorable result.

Both sides will be in action on the next matchday (October 11, 2020), with Mohammedan Sporting taking on the team from Gujarat — ARA FC at the VYBK Stadium in Kolkata and Garhwal playing FC Bengaluru United, who began their campaign with a loss to Bhawanipore FC, at the Kalyani Stadium.

Kolkata, West Bengal: Sanitation tunnels, temperature checks and socially distant pre-match routines were in place at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata as live sporting action returned to Indian shores for the first time since the lockdown, with football leading the way — moving forward together. The first match of the Hero I-League Qualifiers 2020, saw Bhawanipore FC put on a masterclass in counter-attacking football as they registered a 2-0 win over an industrious FC Bengaluru United on Thursday (October 8, 2020).

The match was played under unique circumstances with no fans, water breaks in each half and five substitutions available to coaches under the new COVID-19 protocols. However, that did little to deter the players who put in a passionate display treating fans to their first taste of live sporting action in India since the lockdown.

Bhawanipore FC head coach Shankarlal Chakraborty showed his tactical acumen, starting with a three-man defence which withstood a bright start by FC Bengaluru United. Richard Hood’s team put their opponents under pressure with good movement around the penalty box but were unable to find that final touch to show for all their effort.

The first clear-cut opportunity fell to FC Bengaluru United in the 21st minute when Bhawanipore custodian Shilton Paul came flying off his line to punch clear a corner but couldn’t connect cleanly. However, Bengaluru failed to punish the mistake as Azharuddin Mallick, with very little time to react, was only able to head over the bar.

Paul didn’t let that minor mishap faze him though as he commanded his box impressively, keeping the Bengaluru forwards at bay with a string of impressive collections.

FC Bengaluru continued to press for the opener but much against the run of play, Bhawanipore broke the deadlock in the final minute of the first-half added time. Ghanian forward Philip Adjah was sent through on goal and his shot was only parried onto the feet of an onrushing Pankaj Moula, who was at hand to tap in the rebound.

As expected, FC Bengaluru United came out all guns blazing in the second half but were met by a well-drilled Bhawanipore defence.

With Bengaluru committing men forward, Bhawanipore doubled their lead in the 60th minute with a lightning-quick counter-attack. Altamash Sayed picked up the ball just outside his penalty box and played a long ball in search of Adjah. The Ghanian kept Bengaluru skipper Rana Gharami at bay and then thumped a powerful volley right across the face of goal, leaving the keeper no chance as the ball bounced in off the far post.

Bhawanipore then employed a solid low-block and defended in numbers restricting Bengaluru to just one shot on target in the second half, finishing the game with a well-deserved clean sheet.

After the match, Bhawanipore Head Coach Sankarlal Chakraborty said, “The opposition played well and could have scored too but our defensive game was good and we made the most of our chances. Our discipline and defensive organization was the decisive factor. We hope to improve and build on this for the future matches.”

FC Bengaluru United Head Coach Richard Hood stated, “We weren’t very careful on the counter attacks and we need to sort out how we are going to play the remaining games in terms of how we organize our defence in the opposition half. It’s not all doom and gloom, and we look forward to the next game and the two after that.”

The win gives Bhawanipore three points and puts them on top of the five-team table, a position they would hope to maintain in their quest for Hero I-League qualification. They next take on Garhwal FC on October 14, 2020. FC Bengaluru United will look to put some points on the board as they too face Garhwal in their next outing, scheduled for October 11, 2020.

Bengaluru, Karnataka: Bengaluru FC have signed versatile Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva on a one-year deal with the club having the option to extend it by another year, the Blues announced on Saturday. The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent a better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China.

Silva, who also operates on the wing, became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League. His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club.

The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn’t materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move. “I’ve signed with Bengaluru FC because I want to be a champion and this is a club that is always after titles. I have that opportunity once again at BFC. I want to make the club and its fans happy. I have been following the club for some time now, because we were in talks a while ago. And I liked what I saw. I am looking forward to making my way to Bengaluru and am excited to meet my new teammates, the fans and embrace the city,” said Silva.

Silva becomes Bengaluru’s first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals to Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat said Silva’s addition was an important one, given his penchant for scoring. “Cleiton has a proven track-record when it comes to scoring and this is an area we needed to strengthen on the squad. The goals aside, he even has an eye for a quality final pass and we’re looking forward to working with him.”

“Cleiton is a player we had been tracking closely through last season and even Carles was of the opinion that we should bring him to Bengaluru when the chance arises. We’re glad that things fell in place and that he is now part of our charge for the coming season,” said club CEO, Mandar Tamhane.

New Delhi: India U-16 national team Head Coach Bibiano Fernandes sounded positive about the ‘tough draw’ for India’s campaign in the AFC U-16 Championship Bahrain 2020, reiterating his belief in the ability of his boys to perform at the big stage.

In a live chat with AIFF TV, Bibiano said: “I was following the draw live but I did not keep any expectations for it. When I saw our group, I told myself that my team has already given a good account of themselves in qualifiers. I believe from the bottom of my heart that these boys can perform against the countries in the group.”

The draw which was held at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Thursday (June 18) saw India being clubbed alongside Korea Republic, Australia, and Uzbekistan in Group C. India had in the last edition in 2018 lost to Korea Republic by a solitary goal in the quarterfinals wherein a victory would have earned them a slot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

However, Bibiano dismissed notions about the match against Korea Republic to be a ‘revenge match.’

“It looks like that — doesn’t it,” he laughed. “But Korea will also think on the same lines. What’s important at this stage is how soon we can get back to training. The boys need to hit the right chords before the tournament starts.”

“There are so many things you can learn. The way you look at the tournament and change your approach is one of them. We learnt from our experiences from 2018 and have hence, changed and instilled the learnings while scouting these boys, and also in training.”

With all footballing activities in India under the aegis of AIFF staying suspended and with the subsequent lockdown from March onwards (for over a month) having forced all to stay indoors, Bibiano has been in touch with the boys via online sessions.

“It’s been difficult for the world. Everyone is finding their way to cope up. I know a few countries who have already started training. We have been in touch with the boys via online sessions — thrice a week — strength, goalkeeping, ball mastering session. We have watched U-16 matches and have been analysing and discussing with the boys,” he informed.

While Bibiano is often dubbed as the mastermind behind the success of his current team that has gone on an 8-match unbeaten run in International football (five wins in SAFF U-15 Championship, and two wins and a draw in the AFC U-16 Championship Qualifiers), the coach lauded his support staff along with AIFF for giving the boys the platform to go out and perform day in and day out.

“I’m just the face. My support staff has been with me for four-five years now, and they have been working very hard behind the scenes. They are passionate about their work, and they really take care of the boys. That’s why these kids are playing so well,” he said.

“I’d also like to thank the staff working from the Football House in Delhi to make sure that the team gets everything it needs. We never run short of anything. I’ve literally got everything I’ve asked for so far – be it longer camps, more matches, exposure tours. They are all behind the success of this team.”

Bhubaneswar: Odisha FC have secured the services of widemen Baoringdao Bodo and Laishram Premjit Singh, the Bhubaneswar-based club confirmed on Thursday. Assam-born winger, Bodo has played in the Hero Indian Super League (Hero ISL) before and joins Odisha on a two-year contract, while Premjit has been roped in by the club on a four-year deal.

“I am very excited and can’t wait to start my journey with Odisha FC. I want to thank the management for showing faith in me. I feel privileged and great to be part of a system which supports and develops young players. I look forward to playing in front of the faithful Odia fans and give my best. Ama Team, Ama Game, Ama Odisha,” a delighted Bodo said after signing for the club.

Part of a select group of five All India Football Federation (AIFF) elite academy prospects who were sponsored on a developmental stint to FC Metz’s academy in France by Chennaiyin FC, Bodo has made four appearances in the Hero ISL so far.

He featured in two matches for the Marina Machans during their title-winning 2017-18 campaign and was the youngest player to feature in the league at the time. The pacey winger also made two appearances in the Hero ISL for Kerala Blasters FC after joining them in January 2019.

Premjit, on the other hand, has previously represented Manipur’s TRAU FC in the I-League and is looking forward to playing in the Hero ISL. “I am extremely delighted that Odisha FC showed interest in me and they are investing a lot in youngsters. I am looking forward to play for them in the ISL and I am sure that it will be a great opportunity for me to grow further in my professional career,” the 18-year-old said after putting pen to paper.

Odisha FC President Rohan Sharma extended his welcome to the young wingers and expects them to have a bright future. “I am quite happy to welcome both Premjit and Bodo to the club. Premjit is a player who has an extremely bright future and if he can play to his potential, he can be another winger in the same vein as Jerry for the squad. Though only 18, his speed is impressive. We hope to develop him further in the next four years for him to become another winger with blistering pace in our squad,” he said.

“Bodo needs less introduction as not too long ago, he was thought of to be one of the best young prospects in India. While Bodo still has oodles of potential, he has slipped through the cracks a little bit. We are confident that Odisha FC is the club for Bodo to come back strong and make an impact in India once again. I am certain that Bodo will work hard to get his names in the headlines once again,” Sharma added.

After confirming the signing of goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh a few days back as well as the acquisitions of fullback Geroge D’Souza and defensive duo Hendry Antonay and Saurabh Meher last week, Bodo and Premjit become Odisha’s latest incomings.
